Ritmo de dos mares

"Ritmo de Dos Mares" is a cultural and musical exchange project connecting Portobelo (Panama) and Tumaco (Colombia), focusing on the Afro-diasporic roots of both regions.

Rhythm of two seas: the native sound of Portobelo to Tumaco, is a musical and cultural exchange project organized by Discos Pacífico, Fundación Bahía de Portobelo and Fundación Gladys Palmera. The artistic part is made up of Bejuco, the folkloric group from the port of Tumaco, on the Pacific coast of the Department of Nariño, in Colombia; and the musical projects of La Escuelita del Ritmo, the social and artistic work of Gladys Palmera in Portobelo, on the Atlantic coast of Panama.

As the Art Director, I was tasked with creating the whole visual identity that encapsulates the project's essence, celebrating the rich cultural heritage and musical traditions of these coastal communities.

This project is a colaboration between Pánama (La Escuelita del Ritmo), Colombia (Bejuco) and Spain (Fundación Gladys Palmera).

The logo was designed with a modular approach to proportions, symbolizing the construction of various elements seamlessly fitting together into a unified whole. The icon, on the other hand, represents waves formed by the two "seas," reflecting their union. These waves also resemble the undulating patterns of audio waveforms, subtly connecting to the project's cultural and musical essence.

This is how we developed a graphic system that will serve as the foundation for storytelling on social media and other plattforms.

These applications can be adapted to various formats, as demonstrated in this video and post.

The project is a meeting in the sounds of two seas with a common point.

And at the same time, a space for connecting two creative laboratories born on different coasts, but connected by that common root that is the Afro-descendant culture. In the laboratories, knowledge will be shared, territories will be explored and an approach will be made to traditional cultural practices.
This is the story of a journey that connects two creative laboratories born in different latitudes, but united by the search for a common root. A root that travels between the past, present and future, which has multiple facets: the African diaspora in Latin America; the story of two communities proud of their history and legacy; the heritage of two rebellious and creative peoples; and the story of an encounter that proposes a sound dialogue and the creation of a new musical universe.

This is a story that is told to the beat of the waves of two seas; beat by beat, rhythm by rhythm and dance by dance.

This project is still going and will cotinue to expand this running year and will lead to the production of a music album that captures the sound of the whole experience, which we’ll still be in charge of designing, so keep your head up to further followups.
