Malafama is a platform for independent music that escapes the rankings and circuits of the mainstream industry.



Not a fixed place, not a single format — a curatorial position that takes different forms: DJ sets, vinyl sessions, events, exhibitions, audiovisual publications. What distinguishes Malafama is not only what sounds, but what it represents. Each presentation is a cultural argument: afrotropical music, Latin American underground, Caribbean bass, independent labels from the global south that the industry ignores but that have spent decades redefining what tropical music can be. Sounds with Black roots that look forward without letting go of the past.



Malafama does not arrive alone. Over the years it has woven an organic network of selectors, artists, collectives, and collaborators — a diverse community that mixes the Latin American diaspora, the Barcelona independent scene, and new audiences who find in these sounds something they did not expect. That network is part of the proposition: Malafama can activate and connect artists and selectors from that ecosystem according to the context and the space.



Nixer



Nicolás Molina operates musically as Nixer — Colombian selector and curator, resident in Barcelona since 2018. His practice comes from inside the scene. His trajectory through La Murga Visual, his design studio focused on giving identity to cultural projects, music and cinema, has placed him in direct contact with the tropical underground of Colombia and Barcelona: independent labels, artists outside the mainstream circuit, collectives that are redefining what Latin American music sounds like. That access is the foundation of his curatorial criteria.

His sets are not a postcard of the tropics. They are a deep reading of a living tradition: sounds with Black roots projected through time, technology, and geography — reconstructed into something that carries its history without being trapped in it. The selection surprises through innovative sounds loaded with high energy and a coherent narrative between eclectic visions.

Musical territory



The richness of tropical music is in its diversity — and that diversity is enormous. Most people know only the surface. Malafama digs deeper, especially into the Colombian independent scene that has spent 25 years building on the shoulders of the golden era of salsa and cumbia: absorbing those traditions, distorting them, mixing them with electronics, with African rhythms, with psychedelia, with whatever makes sense. The result is an eclectic, alive, constantly moving music that the industry does not know how to sell but that fills any dance floor.

Stereo Trópico

Live tropical music curation project, co-directed as Nixer & Sonikgroove. “Warm brutalism, lively typography, collective rhythm.” A project that challenges what Latin American tropical music is allowed to be. Barcelona.



Memoria Sónica

Vinyl sessions investigating afrotropical sonic resistance through time — a musical journey through a world in permanent process of decolonisation. With Zé Fuga (Colombian MC and producer, Barcelona). Presented in public space with the Pororoca Soundsystem: two bicycles with an autonomous 2,000-watt system. Inaugurated the Memoria Gráfica exhibition at Centro Cultural Albareda, Poble-sec.

Memoria Gráfica

Exhibition documenting the graphic component of Colombian independent music production over the last two decades. Record covers as cultural objects. An initiative conceived to create a direct link between the Colombian independent music scene and new audiences in Europe. Curated by Malafama in collaboration with designers and artists from Colombia. First edition at Centro Cultural Albareda, Poble-sec, Barcelona.



Visiones de Cumbia

Three DJs, three distinct connections to cumbia, one stage. The diversity of influences is the concept: each selector expands the genre from a different place. Sessions accompanied by live visuals that build an immersive environment where music and image feed each other.
