Similarly, the African diaspora crossed the sea and, through rhythm, resilience, and memory, transformed displacement into connection and the journey into creative power. CALIMA was a rare opportunity to build a visual identity for a project that is not only musical, but cultural, ancestral, and deeply collaborative. As Art Director and Designer for this release, my goal was to create a visual language that could hold the same weight, depth, and hybridity as the music itself — a language that reflects the invisible threads connecting West Africa, the Mandé world, the Afro-Colombian Pacific, and contemporary diasporic jazz. This project lives in between worlds: between tradition and innovation, between continents, between spiritual memory and modern expression. The identity needed to feel rooted, but not fixed — ancestral, but not archival — contemporary without losing its spiritual and historical depth. What made this project special for me was that it wasn’t about imposing a look — it was about listening. Listening to the music, the stories, the intentions, and then translating that into form. The record is a sonic journey that blends the potent rhythms and rich musical heritage of West Africa and Mandé jazz with the Afro-Colombian pulse of marimba, drums, and Pacific coast chants.Balimaya Project — a London-based, Mandé-inspired band redefining jazz for the 21st century — dives deep into West African folklore, spinning tradition into something urgent and new. On the other side, The Discos Pacífico All Stars bring together a powerhouse lineup of musicians from iconic Colombian groups like Bejuco and Semblanzas del Río Guapi. Together, they form a 15-piece supergroup that crosses borders — both literal and sonic. Saturated, powerful colors that build an imaginary world in direct dialogue with the music. Human figures that deform and merge with tropical plant elements — arms becoming fronds, bodies swaying like palms moved by sound. A logotype that is compressed, distorted, sometimes animated — irregular by design, not by accident. The layout logic is simple and replicable: illustration anchoring the bottom, typography dominating above. A system that creates instant continuity across digital flyers, Instagram posts, printed banners and merchandise — and that has generated the rarest thing a visual identity can achieve: immediate recognition. High fidelity without coldness. Underground without roughness. The concept drew from the natural oasis as metaphor — life emerging from the desert, a refuge of depth and calm in the middle of urban noise. The logomark carries the sonic vocabulary of the project: rhythm, wave, frequency, movement. "Santuario Creativo del Sonido" is not a tagline — it's a cultural declaration that the design makes visible before a single note is played. The manifesto — written as part of the conceptual development — defines the community logic that the visual identity then translates: Somos comunidad, no clientela. Somos devoción, no tendencia. Somos ritmo, no algoritmo. Through a collection of more than five hundred pieces—including photographs, album covers, posters, costumes, and more—Fundación Gladys Palmera and Casa de América place the spotlight on the figure of the Latin woman in the entertainment industry with a major exhibition on view until July 5, 2025. Our studio had the privilege of creating the visual identity for Latina, an exhibition organized by Fundación Gladys Palmera in the iconic Casa América building in Madrid. The show is a vibrant and necessary tribute to Latin women who shaped the history of entertainment—from the 1920s through the 1980s—with power, talent, and cultural affirmation. We began by designing a bold, character-driven logo that embodies the spirit of resistance, emancipation, and leadership running through the exhibition. We aimed to create a brand that didn’t just identify the event, but proudly represented it, reflecting the strength and charisma of the women featured—legends like Celia Cruz, La Lupe, Chavela Vargas, María Félix, Yma Sumac, among many others. Seen across Madrid—from street walls and bars to galleries and cultural centers—the poster was created to demand attention, spark curiosity, and emotionally connect with a history that has long been overlooked. The visual composition combined graphic and photographic elements that evoke the iconic universe of these women, their struggles, and their triumphs. Our approach was to support—through design—a narrative that fearlessly explores the tension between exotification and empowerment, between glamour and hypersexualization, while ultimately celebrating dos mares "Ritmo de Dos Mares" is a cultural and musical exchange project connecting Portobelo (Panama) and Tumaco (Colombia), focusing on the Afro-diasporic roots of both regions. Rhythm of two seas: the native sound of Portobelo to Tumaco, is a musical and cultural exchange project organized by Discos Pacífico, Fundación Bahía de Portobelo and Fundación Gladys Palmera. This is the story of a journey that connects two creative laboratories born in different latitudes, but united by the search for a common root.
